According to our approach, the entire process of learning should be oriented towards developing abilities to connect to the global knowledge network of the cyber-world with a specific social context and purpose in mind.

This makes it possible to improve the possibilities of underdeveloped communities obtaining social inclusion through digital inclusion, and creating self-sustainable forms of social development. The primary teaching staff in this project would comprise of voluntary contributions from a much-neglected resource--the elderly community. Throughout the last century, mainstream visions of aging have largely seen the senior years as a time for withdrawing from making contribution to the larger community, a time for winding down. However, history tells us that, until the Industrial Revolution, elders had had honoured roles in the society that were defined and supported.

Elders have been the nurturers of the community, the spiritual leaders, and the guardians of the traditions, the teachers, mentors and initiators of the young. This approach will help social inclusion of both elderly community and the underprivileged youth through all-pervasive social knowledge management using Internet. We are on the brink of an extraordinary revolution that is changing our world.

In this new world, everyone — everything is connected everywhere in real time. This concept of connected world using Internet and Social Web is fundamentally changing the way we innovate, collaborate, produce, govern and sustain. The objectives of our studies are to investigate some aspects of internet-based digital economy to examine how it has transformed the organization of social groups, firms, industries, markets, commerce and modes of distribution.

Studying social dynamics of Internet is an interdisciplinary study that includes researchers from Computer Science, Informatics, Social Sciences and Management Sciences. The ultimate goal is to create better understanding of socially-centric platforms not just as a technology, but also as a set of social phenomena. To that end, the research agenda should include i using world wide web in the study of social phenomena, ii applying computational modeling and simulation to facilitate the study of social systems and human social dynamics, and iii designing future Internet technologies and applications that consider social context.

The system can also be connected wirelessly with Variable Message Sign VMS to divert the traffic upon automatic detection of congestion on a stretch of a road. Government agencies, especially traffic control department, may use this system for real-time congestion monitoring by installing the system with probe vehicles. Road research organizations and NGOs, may use this for studying and analyzing traffic mobility and congestion patterns. Today as organizations are facing increasing global competition, we have researched to give a pathway to streamline their operation and improve efficiency especially in the area of industrial safety and security.

Our objective is to help the industries making smart decisions based on real-time data by customizing the wireless tracking and sensing system developed in our earlier projects to meet the safety and security requirements of industries. This way, the existing organizational safety and security process may be improved to a great extent through emerging techniques. Climatological condition monitoring is one of the most important aspects in agricultural production that has a direct impact on the productivity and maintenance of field crop.

A huge loss is incurred every year due to damages of crop by various diseases caused by improper climatological conditions. Deployment of intelligent sensor nodes, around the crop field, promises a wide range of new applications like plant growth monitoring and monitoring of various environmental conditions that influences agricultural productions. This project was taken up with an aim to design, develop and implement a sensor-based wireless network in a pilot scale to monitor agricultural parameters like temperature, humidity, Soil pH, Soil Moisture, Electrical conductivity, Soil temperature etc.

Air pollution is one of the most important environmental issues that has its direct effect on human health and maintenance of ecological balance. Environment and Safety monitoring is also a grave concern in almost every industrial sector. The objective of this project was to design, develop and implement a sensor-based wireless mesh network in a pilot scale to monitor the level of air pollution in real-time for the protection of public space.

Wireless sensor network offer powerful ways to monitor air quality, without the costs of major new installations or laying wires. Natural and man-made disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, storm, structural collapses dams, thermal power stations etc , pose an ever-present challenge to public emergency services. In order to cope with such disasters in a fast and highly coordinated manner, the optimal provision of information concerning the situation is an essential pre-requisite.

Police, Fire Departments, Public Health, Civil Defense and other organizations have to react not only efficiently and individually, but also in a coordinated manner. This results in the need for both Intra and Inter Organization communication at several stages. Since lack of communication implies lack of information flow to government and other agencies, this would not only hamper taking timely action but also hinder efficient resource usage and management.

The objective of this project was to investigate computer-mediated disaster communication system using rapidly deployable mobile computing and wireless communication technology and to realize a prototype of a Secure Decentralized Disaster Management System and Information Network. Usually, in ad hoc networks, all nodes are equipped with omni-directional antenna.

Consequently, lots of nodes in the neighborhood of transmitter and receiver have to sit idle, waiting for the data communication between transmitter and receiver to finish. To alleviate this problem, researchers have proposed to use directional antennas that direct the transmitting and receiving beams toward the receiver and transmitter nodes only. This would largely reduce radio interference, thereby improving the utilization of wireless medium and consequently the network throughput.

Additionally, use of directional antenna conserves the power, since it is possible to access a neighboring node directionally with less power compared to omni-directional antenna. The objective of this work was to develop both simulation and testbed environment to monitor and evaluate the performance of multi-hop ad hoc networks using directional ESPAR antenna.

It provides a node with the facility of location tracking and topology discovery and its graphical user interfaces help to easily represent the current location of neighbors and approximate global topology. The objective of the proposed work was to study the dynamics of the mobile hosts in ad hoc wireless networks in order to analyze the survivability properties and to devise routing mechanisms to ensure stable communication structure among mobile nodes for effective communication. The behavior of the ad hoc network as a whole is assayed and the trends in the inter-parameter dependencies are analyzed with the objective of addressing the survivability issues.

The performances of different routing protocols have been evaluated in a simulated environment. The objective of this work is to propose a framework based on mobile agents for efficient message communication among mobile hosts with minimal control overhead. We have devised an agent-based framework with its associated protocols and mechanisms. The agents in the framework move from one node to another in the ad hoc network. The primary objective of this mobile multi-agent framework is to asynchronously collect network information like node velocity, node location etc.

This is accomplished proactively with the aim of making all nodes in the system network-aware. We have investigated the framework both with and without GPS Global Positioning System support at each node for the extraction of co-ordinates, velocity and direction of movement of each node.

The objectives of this project, called DiSARM Post-Disaster Situation Analysis and Resource Management using Delay-Tolerant Wireless Peer-to-Peer Networks are to: Develop a disruption-prone wireless communication infrastructure with the help of smart-phones and allied rapidly deployable mobile devices that can effectively carry forward communication in the form of a peer-to-peer Delay Tolerant Network DTN in a disastrous situation, Develop a robust framework that will lead to overall need assessment and situation analysis from piecewise localized views of the rescue teams and victims once a disaster occurs, and Develop a coordination system to guide the resource distribution process, thus providing core disaster management services to the victims.

It is largely successful. Despite lengthy definitional discussions and dense referencing, the book is also very readable and what is more, should be read. The social informatics perspective of the book means its outlook is neither entirely technology-driven — whatever the problem the right system can solve it — nor purely qualitative, but combines understanding of the technology and its social and organisational impact with an analysis of the interdependencies at play in the context of public service delivery.

When delivering public services we need to know the nature, relationships and context of all the players before determining the appropriate identity and information governance, the authors conclude. Because so far, despite all its promise, digital government has entrenched existing power relationships rather than disrupting them. Most important is the recognition that technology only empowers when we feel ownership of it, not controlled by it. The next Government will be faced with the necessity of doing more, better and for less. The opportunity for digital service improvement, rather than the commoditised data integration and cost stripping we see today, is extremely attractive.

That, perhaps, is for a sequel. I look forward to reading it.
