This tradition-oriented idea is within the visual poetry community important because most visual poets tend to align themselves within one or the other visual poetry tradition, thus mis? Although it is up to the audience itself to decide to not follow the visual poet and decide how to approach a visual poem, a basic understanding of the history of modern visual poetry seems adamant to be able to grasp the visual poem as a work of art. Just like with a work of art, a visual poem cannot be reproduced in any other way than via multimedia techniques like a photo, a computer print or even better: a video recording.
A traditional poem can be written, printed, knitted onto fabric or painted on a building, but the poem and its meaning will — in principle — stay the same. A visual poem, on the contrary, is co-defined by the material it is made of and by the techniques used. It will have a different impact depending on the way it has been produced. These artists create a dynamic and significant relationship between signs in the poem and their different possible structures: morphological, phonetic, syntactic, and semantic.
Verbal, visual, and sound elements are combined in an active and fragmented mode. In their work usually syntax is subordinated to a paratactic structure. This mental split is also described by Willard Bohn , p. Helen White , p.

Francis Edeline , p. Thus long before writing,- let alone printing,- was invented. He continues by Poetry being strictly oral, colour could not be one of its dimensions. Multimedia techniques, I think, could be the way out of this conundrum. White , p. Visual poetry gets us to look at works as well as read them, while sound poetry gets us to hear as well as listen.
Curiously, these two limits intersect, as when a visual poem is performed as a sound poem or a sound poem is scored as a visual poem. Or as McCattery et. Visual poetry, while extending both the context and the possibilities of communicational codes, still remains in language, and where a letter resides, be it in a mutilated abstract form or situated conventionally in a word, then the invitation to sounding it becomes an insistence.
So think of and treat this … as a challenge to sound, to howl, to scream the work before you. So you, dear reader, know what to do when the next time you come across a visual poem: See, read, puzzle, listen and above all read it out loud.
